The inaugural award for the best Tour Guide in Hong Kong - issued by the Hong Kong Tourism Authorities in March 2026 - way to go Alexandra!

Warmest congratulations to my great friend and fellow Hong Kong tour guide, Alexandra Malandain of Hong Kong A La Carte!

Last week, Alexandra was deeply honoured to receive the Outstanding Tourist Guide of Hong Kong award under the inaugural “首届导游及领队嘉许计划” (First Tour Guide and Tour Escort Commendation Scheme), organised by the Travel Industry Authority (TIA).

This brand-new recognition programme was created to celebrate guides and tour escorts who deliver exceptional service, uphold the highest professional standards, and contribute wholeheartedly to making Hong Kong a premier tourism destination - Alexandra’s award is a wonderful acknowledgement of her passion, expertise, warmth, and dedication - qualities that shine through in every tour she leads.

As someone who has lived in Hong Kong for 54 years and operated as a full-time private tour guide since 2010 - with my companies J3 Consultants Hong Kong and J3 Private Tours Hong Kong now proudly completing over 2,360 private tours — I have always believed there is more than enough business for everyone who truly loves this city and wants to share it authentically with visitors. I have never had an issue working with my competitors. In fact, I am genuinely proud to belong to a close-knit group of like-minded tour owners and guides who have supported one another for the past 13 years. Our shared mission remains simple yet powerful: to give every single guest the very best possible experience of Hong Kong.

That is why I personally think it is absolutely awesome that Alexandra has received this well-deserved honour. She is an amazing tour guide — knowledgeable, engaging, endlessly patient, and always ready to uncover the perfect story or hidden corner that turns a simple day into a lifelong memory. Whether guiding through the vibrant streets of Central, revealing the serene beauty of a New Territories village, or ensuring every guest feels genuinely cared for on a private itinerary, Alexandra consistently goes above and beyond. In our industry, where the difference between a good tour and an unforgettable one lies in the heart and attention to detail of the guide, she sets a shining example.

… and I must mention her business partner Stephanie, totally on the same level as Alexandra when it comes to guiding!

To Alexandra: congratulations ….Your recognition reflects not only your personal excellence but also the collective dedication of all the hardworking guides who help visitors fall in love with Hong Kong every day. What can I say, completely fluent in French and English, Alexandra and Stephanie bring a welcome diversity to the Private Tour Guide fraternity in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong A La Carte also has a small group of fabulous guides that offer tours in French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Cantonese and Mandarin.

They have on offer almost 40 tours which pretty much covers everything Hong Kong has to offer and naturally they offer totally customised private tours and they can also do tours in Macau and Shenzhen, Mainland China

The best advice I can give you is simply to spend some time exploring their comprehensive website and then contact them with your ideas and such for pricing and booking options and I know that they would much prefer you book directly through their website rather than with OTA’s (Online Travel Agent)

I know from personal experience that they are totally dedicated to providing the best possible guest experience and I absolutely recommend that you contact them.

I do not do food tours as mentioned above, I have very specific reasons and part of it is that I do not speak Cantonese or write Chinese, I am from Yorkshire in England and I lack the language gene and it is not through lack of trying and yes a lot of restaurants do not have English menu’s or staff who speak conversational English.

.. and yet I have eaten at close to 1,400 restaurants in Hong Kong since January 2nd 1972, my wife was born in Hong Kong and we have been together over 40 years and her first language is Cantonese and a lot of her family are Chinese or half Chinese so I have never had much of an issue!

This does not translate to doing food tours though, yes, I could do them, no problem there but they would never ever be as good as the food tours done by my friends (see the 3 links above) most of their awesome guides are locally born Hong Kong Chinese and obviously food culture is part of their DNA, it is impossible for me to compete with that!
