Discover the Real Hong Kong with Jamie

The Number 1 place to visit in Hong Kong | Victoria Peak

I have a thing about Victoria Peak or the Peak as it is known in Hong Kong, I have lived in Hong Kong for 52 years and have been to the Peak over 6,000 times since 1972.

That I guess makes me uniquely qualified to talk about Victoria Peak.

This is one of my more simple blog posts, with the links I am providing, the statement below becomes real.

Discover The Real Victoria Peak Hong Kong in 4 hours

I am on a one man crusade to make visitors aware that with the right information, my how to guides and my revealing blog posts, the Real Victoria Peak is a 4 hour quest and you will appreciate the awesome, stunning and amazing views of Hong Kong and not forgetting the intriguing history.

  • Honestly I get really annoyed with travel bloggers giving incorrect information about the best view, best time to visit the Peak, why you should walk up from the Business District (a terrible idea) but it is the factual errors that get to me because they are visitors they do not know Victoria Peak at all, they do not know the facts or the history and do not have the knowledge that a long term resident has. I get more than a little frustrated.

  • One prime example is that pretty much every travel blogger (and some uniformed residents) states that Lugard Road at Victoria Peak is a walking path and there are no cars, this is totally incorrect, there are quite a few residences on Lugard Road and residents have a permit to drive cars on this road, delivery vans and trucks can also use Lugard Road and I have the photographs to prove it! Lugard Road when it was constructed between 1913 - 1921 it was done so with the intent of giving the public a place to walk to to admire the views, perhaps due to cost constraints and construction issues it was quite narrow but like all roads in Hong Kong it was made for vehicular traffic in mind. I strive for accuracy and at the end of the day there are not many houses so traffic is light to say the least which is a blessing for people who love to do the Peak Circular walk along Lugard Road and Harlech Road.

  • I get really annoyed with the thousands of well meaning visitors giving out incorrect information on their Tripadvisor reviews and they can be quite scathing about the Peak Tam, some of it is true but with a bit of planning and common sense it need not be, my comments regarding travel bloggers can also be applied to most tourists, there is no shortage of information given out by the Peak Tramways Company about avoiding the crowds, visitors simply choose to ignore it.

  • I know that Travel Bloggers and Tourists are well meaning and I appreciate them taking the time and trouble to write about Victoria Peak but all the incorrect information given out shapes perception for people reading their missives and reviews and it perpetuates all the myths and distorts reality.

  • .. and the biggest myth of them all is that the view from the Peak Tower Sky Terrace 428 is the best view at Victoria Peak which is nonsense. I have never, ever been a fan of the Peak Tower and my first visit to it was to the original Peak Tower which opened in the summer of 1972, it was pretty bad then, now it is just a nightmare and I hate the fact that the overriding aim is simply to gouge the visitor for as much money as possible and worse they do not seem to care one bit about all of the problems they have - anyway, my blog posts cover this.

  • … and I get really annoyed that many Tour Companies in Hong Kong simply cannot be bothered to show you the best views or give you any sort of accurate factual information.

  • Oh I forgot, I have written extensively about walking up to Victoria Peak from the business district (sea level) I simply amazed at how many travel bloggers and the like talk about it as if it is a short, easy and gentle walk, it is NOT, for the vast majority of visitors to Hong Kong it is simply a horrendous idea particularly in the summer, I absolutely know that certain fit people like a challenge and if time is not a concern then by all means take up the challenge but it is incredibly steep no matter what route you take, I mean seriously walking from the subway to the Peak Tram on Garden Road is enough to make you curse and that is the gentle part, I simply cannot understand how and why a family with kids and strollers would want to do this, I have walked all of the routes many times over the years but by myself, never, ever again. Think about it, you go from sea level to 1,400ft in very short order, it is NOT a gentle incline

All you have to do is click on the links proved below and spend a bit of time reading my guides and blog posts

And the Peak Tower is NOT in any shape or form the place to get the amazing view at Victoria Peak, most years probably 5 million + people visit the Peak Tower Sky Terrace 428 and perhaps you are thinking that 5 million visitors can’t be wrong, well, they are, simply click on the link below

Victoria Peak Garden, Victoria Peak Hong Kong

The amazing view from Barker Road at Victoria Peak and to 99.999999% of visitors to Hong Kong and to residents of Hong Kong, it is completely unknown.

Jamie’s spot at the Peak, yes the greatest city view in the world at the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak | TOP THAT!

One of those completely unknown views at Victoria Peak, this was taken on Severn Road.

The image that made my blood boil, a composite fake image purporting to have been taken at Victoria Peak, done for clicks and commercial gain, it is a completely FAKE image.

The truly stunning night view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

If I had any followers on Instagram who liked views rather than my car images then this would be a classic, Mum, Dad and 4 kids aged from 12 - 22 from England, perfect weather, the planets aligned as they do on most days at the Peak.

This rather sums up Jamie’s spot at the Peak.
