The word stereotype is an interesting word and for some reason the stereotype of young solo travellers is that they are only interested in doing a group tour (free or otherwise) with 20 other people because they meet new and interesting people and make friends.
Interestingly there is one stereotype that is true in Hong Kong and that is that a lot of tour companies are not overly keen on solo travellers, they prefer 2 - 6 people but as a pioneer of private tours in Hong Kong I am a little different I welcome solo travellers with open arms.
Well, based on my own experience there is a flip side to that and that is the solo traveller (for some reason in my case, mainly ladies) who are perfectly happy to do a solo private tour. they will make one friend (me) but one thing is for sure, they are going to learn a lot more about Hong Kong with me rather than taking in the drivel spouted by most large group tour guides (and yes there are exceptions) speaking through a microphone using a memorised script which often is out of date and irrelevant.
So
Solo travel is taking off. More and more adventurers are forging their own path and travelling alone as part of a group tour. And it's no wonder. With the confidence you gain from seeing the world on your terms, solo travel gives you a sense of freedom like nothing else. If you want to travel to your own tune, you'll be in good company with us. Lots of our travellers arrive alone and leave with lifelong friends. With shared authentic experiences in far-flung destinations, our tours for singles are the perfect chance to create lasting friendships.
We take the hassle out of solo trips. And you'll have all the adventure of escaping your comfort zone in a culture far from home. So, what are you waiting for?”
As usual, this is not my blurb, this commentary is from a tour company that welcomes bookings for solo travellers but theirs are NOT Private Tours but group tours, where there could be 30+ people on the tour with a flag waving guide speaking through a microphone on busy streets, sorry to stress that point.
This is NOT something I do, if you are solo traveller then you are booking a tour for one with me Jamie, I do not use other guides.
I also like this comment :
“Travelling alone can seem daunting, but more of us are starting to embrace the benefits, such as an increased sense of confidence and unbridled freedom to do exactly what you want, when you want, without having to compromise for others.”
Doing a tour with me is very different than doing a group tour, free or paid, you are with me for 3 to 8 hours and that means a lot of conversation and hopefully you will come away from the experience with a solid knowledge of what makes Hong Kong so special..

So here are a few facts about Jamie and his Private Tours for solo travellers in Hong Kong.
I did 350 + tours and experiences between 2011 - 2020 with solo travellers and then Hong Kong was closed to tourism for literally 3 years due to Covid
or another way of looking at it, 15% + of my guests were solo travellers and this is the same figure in 2025
90% of these tours and experiences where with solo female travellers
The age range of my solo traveller guest was from 14 - 85, with most travellers being between 20 - 35
It would also be true to say that a lot of my sole female travellers where the wives of businessmen who felt getting out and about was better than vegging in a hotel room whilst hubby was working!
“Solo travel is a trend that appears to be here to stay with travellers wanting to explore the world. Experiences that offer flexibility, inclusivity and cultural exploration are going to remain popular with solo travellers for the year ahead.” a quote from a Travel Blog in late 2024.
Hong Kong is a very large city, 430 sq m or 1,114 sq km and has a population of roughly 7.54 million people. Hong Kong is also a very safe city and the citizens are very friendly but Hong Kong is not perfect, with me you get my views on life in Hong Kong and what makes Hong Kong tick and after 53 years living here I have a handle on that!
I have travelled myself extensively to many cities around the world and for me anyway Hong Kong is quite unique with such an interesting history, I have lived in Hong for 25 years under British Rule and 28 years under Chinese Rule, I am married to a local lady and we have 3 sons aged 25, 32 and 42, her native language is Cantonese and then English and works in an International School., we live in a town out in the sticks so to speak, a middle class apartment block and in our town, there are virtually NO foreigners living there which I always find quite odd given our amazing transport options and cheapish rents….
Unlike a lot of tour companies in Hong Kong, I welcome solo travellers to experience my Private Tours I have a lot of experience doing them and I have to say I thoroughly enjoy doing them, you would be amazed at how much can be seen in half a day or longer so to speak.
A word about young solo travellers
Young people are always very comfortable around me, we have 3 sons aged 26, 32 and 42 so I am familiar with the mind set of young folk!
I know that typically a solo traveller is more likely to do a group tour when in Hong Kong as this gives them a chance to meet new people and make new friends and I do not dispute that., although I think this is a great option if you want do a group food tour which is more about eating than seeing the sights and learning about Hong Kong Culture, but from my perspective something gets lost if you are part of a large group and yes, there are plenty of options in Hong Kong if you want to do free tours or very low cost tours, I have done these tours in the interests of research and a lot of the solo travellers I saw I guess you would call backpackers on a limited budget.
My tours are not cheap as you will note from the prices I charge and honestly, you get what you pay for (sorry for the cliche)
One of my more interesting solo traveller guests was a lovely lady from the USA, over the course of 3 years we did 8 private tours in Hong Kong! I have also done many tours with ladies who wanted to see Hong Kong whilst their husbands were doing business meetings and such.
I am all about quality and giving you the best possible experience, I have lived in Hong Kong for 53 years and have completed so far 2,330+ Private Tours of Hong Kong and I guess I am also popular because I am English and we should not have any communication issues! I also have a very English sense of humour! I should also point out that I do not speak Cantonese but this has NEVER been a problem for me and my wife is just a phone call away, anyway!

Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak - an EPIC selfie spot, the best in Hong Kong
This is a private tour and I do not work to a fixed itinerary, I am a veteran of over 2,340+ private tours and flexibility is my middle name, I can accommodate special requests (subject to time constraints) or you can leave it in my capable hands.
An accurate description of my private tours is that of a hybrid walking tour, it is NOT all walking, I make extensive use of Public Transport which is Hong Kong Culture 101 and makes getting from A to B to C a breeze, please note I do NOT do car tours.
I also understand that solo travellers like to document their travels on social media, I take that into account and please be aware that I have written a couple of blog posts about the horrible travel cliches, hidden gems, secret spots, travel like a local! please be aware that for example on Instagram people do not upload raw images, they tend to be heavily filtered with a dream like quality, in real life the subject of the image is quite different and trust me after 10 years of Instagram there is no such thing as a hidden gem any more in Hong Kong, a million people have been there done that and took the picture!
Please note I do know a little about photography, I have over 174,000+ images on my Flickr site, I am not in any shape or form a professional photographer but have a very nice camera and a lot of my guests use my image site for a spot of research on places they might like to visit.

I am a Yorkshireman and English, we should have no communication problems!
My insider tip 1
Please note that in general if you book a tour on Viator or Tripadvisor you generally have NO control over what guide will lead your Private Tour of Hong Kong and this is the most important component of the tour. I urge you to check the actual company website and book via their website and do not forget to read Tripadvisor reviews as well.
My insider tip 2
My Private Tours are a combination of walking and using public transport and we go at a pace that suits you, I have never owned or driven a car in Hong Kong and I am somewhat of an expert on public transport, you want to know what makes Hong Kong tick well, travelling on the subway, buses, ferries, trams etc gives you that insight an insight you will not get sat in the back of a car and it enables us to cover a lot more ground on our tour.
