I am not one for hyperbole but I was overcome with awe when I walked past Ronald Abram Jewellers in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Central, Hong Kong recently, I was lost for words as I viewed their window displays, it must have been the lights but I have NEVER seen diamonds shimmer like they did I was completely mesmerised.
I have lived in Hong Kong for 53 years, It is a little known fact that I have a major qualification in diamonds which I am sure lapsed many decades ago and I learnt the jewellery trade in Hong Kong by working for Continental Jewellery Company, I worked in their Holiday Inn Golden Mile outlet (in the shopping arcade) on Nathan Road in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
My life took a different path but I have never lost my love for diamonds and I just love looking at very expensive jewellery in window displays and wished I was a billionaire so I could shower these shimmering baubles on the wife!
I have been walking past their showroom in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong many times over the decades, I have been in there 10 times since 2010 and had a guest purchase some jewellery from them once.
I am on friendly terms with the security guards (who are numerous) and they ignore my lack of appreciation for fine tailored clothes, I am a Lands End guy, comfort is more important than style and frankly an expensive outfit from our finest tailors in Hong Kong would look silly on me, I always appreciate security people that have learnt not to treat people who dress like a street bum, like a street bum!
I have attached the link to their website which does not do their jewellery justice, you just have to see them for yourself.
Hong Kong has no shortage of fine jewellery companies such as Graff, Harry Winston, Van Cleef and Arpels, Cariter and such + our home grown jewellers Chow Tai Fook and Luk Fook (they have jewellery on display for millions of US$ with a price tag attached which comes as a bit of a surprise as they have so many outlets and look and feel like a chain store) but I am always totally mesmerised by Ronald Abram Jewellers
History and Story of Ronald Abram Jewellery in Hong Kong
Ronald Abram Jewellery, a prestigious high jewellery house, was founded in 1987 by Ronald Abram and his wife, Joyce, in Hong Kong. The brand’s origins trace back to Ronald’s early career in the gem trade, influenced by his father, Simon Abram, a renowned gem dealer known as the “King of Burmese Rubies” in the 1960s and 1970s. Ronald began working in the family business, Siba, in New York, delivering stones to esteemed jewellery houses like Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb, and Harry Winston.
His time in New York’s diamond district on 47th Street and later in Italy during the 1970s, where he developed a passion for Art Deco design and worked closely with the Bulgari family, shaped his expertise and aesthetic sensibilities.
In the 1970s, Ronald, alongside his father and elder brother Sam, expanded the family business internationally, establishing offices in Milan, Bogota, Bombay, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. By the 1980s, Ronald and Joyce settled in Hong Kong, recognizing the city’s growing appetite for luxury and sophistication. In 1988, they opened their flagship salon at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, a landmark location that has since become synonymous with the brand’s heritage. This move marked a significant milestone, establishing Ronald Abram as a trusted name among collectors and connoisseurs.
The business has remained family-run, with Ronald and Joyce’s son, Jonathan “JJ” Abram, joining in 2004, cementing its status as a multi-generational enterprise. JJ has driven modernization efforts, including a digital transformation with the launch of an e-commerce platform in 2022 and a rebranding initiative with the tagline “Worthy of Collection.” In 2023, the brand underwent a design renaissance, collaborating with Paris-based designers to create contemporary pieces while maintaining its focus on timeless elegance. Ronald Abram has also expanded its international presence, targeting markets like the US and the Middle East, while continuing to prioritize relationships with clients.
The brand is celebrated for its expertise in rare gems, including Burmese rubies, Colombian emeralds, Kashmir sapphires, and fancy colored diamonds. Its collections span high jewellery, fine jewellery, bridal, gentlemen’s jewels (notably cufflinks and rings), and estate jewellery, with a particular affinity for Art Deco pieces. Notable creations include a 73.68-carat internally flawless pear-shaped Snowdrop Diamond necklace and rare fancy vivid colored diamonds (pink, blue, and orangy yellow). The atelier in Central, Hong Kong, combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques, emphasizing precision and quality.
Location
Ronald Abram’s flagship salon is located at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, 5 Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong, a prestigious address that aligns with the brand’s luxury positioning. The Art Deco-inspired salon, opened in 1988, features modern furnishings, contrasting wood veneers, plush leather seats, and tiered rotating showcases that highlight the brand’s exquisite jewels.
Although it has been suggested that there is or was a second boutique located at The Peninsula Hotel, Mezzanine Floor, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, I have not seen any evidence of this and there is no mention of this on their website, I wonder if they are confusing the store Graff with Ronald Abram? Graff dominates the Mezzazine floor in the Peninsula. I will check again on my next visit to the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong.
Clientele
Ronald Abram caters to a discerning, high-net-worth clientele, including royalty, members of state, and Hong Kong’s elite movers and shakers. The brand’s clients value exclusivity, rarity, and craftsmanship, often seeking collectible pieces that hold investment value. Many are professional women with busy lifestyles who prefer versatile, elegant jewellery suitable for both daily wear and special occasions. The brand also appeals to collectors of antique and estate jewellery, particularly from the Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and Modern eras, and has seen growing interest in gentlemen’s jewellery, such as diamond rings and cufflinks. Ronald Abram’s focus on building lasting relationships through personalized service has fostered a loyal following, cultivated through word-of-mouth and high-society networking in Hong Kong.
Reputation and Status in Hong Kong
Ronald Abram is widely regarded as one of Hong Kong’s finest jewellery companies, known for its heritage, quality, and exclusivity. The brand’s reputation is built on nearly a century of family expertise in rare gems and its status as a trusted advisor to collectors. Its salon in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, coupled with its focus on exceptional gemstones and craftsmanship, position it among the city’s top-tier jewellers.
The Hong Kong Jewellers’ and Goldsmiths’ Association’s “Reputation Shop” Mark program, which recognizes businesses meeting high standards, further underscores its credibility. Industry observers note that Ronald Abram’s success as a small, family-run company without aggressive marketing, competing with international brands, is a testament to its quality and reputation.
Owners’ Background
Ronald Abram, the founder, was born into a family with a deep history in the gem trade, led by his father, Simon Abram. Ronald’s early career in New York and Italy, followed by his move to Hong Kong, reflects his global perspective and passion for rare jewels. Joyce Abram, his wife, has been a key partner in establishing and growing the brand. Their son, JJ, born and raised in Hong Kong, has taken on a leadership role as Brand Director, focusing on expanding the business while preserving its legacy.

Involvement in Other Businesses
There is no publicly available information indicating that Ronald, Joyce, or JJ Abram are involved in other businesses in Hong Kong or elsewhere. Ronald Abram Ltd focuses exclusively on importing, retailing, wholesaling, and exporting jewellery and precious stones, such as diamonds, gemstones, jade, pearls, gold, and platinum. The family’s efforts appear concentrated on the jewellery brand, with no mention of other ventures in the provided sources or broader research
… and in my book this makes Ronald Abraham a better company to buy from, one store only rather than multiple stores and you will in all likelihood be dealing with the owners when you purchase a US$3 Million diamond ring and if you play your cards right you might get some Mandarin Oriental Coffee and Cake from the bakery which is literally 5 yards from the jewellery store.
My insider tip
Please note that in general if you book a tour on Viator or Tripadvisor you generally have NO control over what guide will lead your Private Tour of Hong Kong and this is the most important component of the tour. I urge you to check the actual company website and book via their website and do not forget to read Tripadvisor reviews as well.
