The Peninsula Hotel | 5 Star Hotel | Hong Kong

Helping Visitors to choose the best Hotels in Hong Kong

The Peninsula Hotel lobby shown in the image above - as Hotel lobbies go it is my favouite in Hong Kong and has not changed much since the Hotel opened in 1928.

As a Private Tour Guide and Tourism Consultant I have visited many hotels since 2010 as I generally meet guests at their Hotel in Hong Kong, I am a familiar sight in Hotel Lobbies and personally I am quite happy to sit in a lobby and just watch the comings and goings of the staff and Hotel Guests and casual visitors.

My favourite lobby as mentioned above is the Peninsula Hotel. I like busy lobbies and it is fair to say that the 5 listed 5 star Hotels are my favourites, the Ritz Carlton Hotel lobby is stunning as it is on the 103rd floor and it has a second lobby at the Hotel entrance which is technically on the 9th floor.

I also love the Four Seasons Hotel lobby, i bumped into the Wu Tang Clan members and had a chat with them and I met a Princess in there as well (and took her on a tour of Hong Kong)

Over the years I have also visited the rooms so I am pretty familiar with a lot of Hotels and as such a lot of people ask me for recommendations on which Hotel to book.

Total Number of Hotels | Hong Kong

Recommending hotels is not an easy job given that we have over 330 listed Hotels and Guest Houses

Most of my guests who ask me are looking for 4 and 5 star hotels so that makes the task quite easy, over 90% of my guests stay in these categories of Hotels and it is quite something that my taste in Hotels is pretty similar to the lists below.

I should point out that I only very rarely am I asked for my thoughts on budget hotels, it might only happen once a year.

When preparing lists such as these there can be glaring omissions, I thought that I should ask for the top 10 lisiting for each category rather than the top 5 but in the end it is too confusing.if you give too many choices.

We have 60 listed 5 star Hotels!!!

I think after due consideration that the only real glaring issue is that the Four Seasons Hotel does not make the top 5 but as I am at all of the top 5 Hotels all the time I cannot argue with the list

So yes, I would always add a footnote that the Four Seasons in Hong Kongs Central Business District should also be considered, I just love the Hotel and I take a lot of fancy car images there!

The Top 5 Hotels | 5 Star Hotels List | Hong Kong

What a list of 5 star Hotels! I have lost count of the number of times I have been to them, when we arrived in Hong Kong on January 2nd 1972 we stayed in the Merlin Hotel (replaced by the Kowloon Hotel) which was literally 20 yards away from the Peninsula Hotel and I have been in the Peninsula thousands of times. it is such an amazing Hotel and the location is perfect

The Rosewood Hotel was recently voted the best Hotel in the world in 2025 and I would not argue with that, it is about 300 meters from the Peninsula Hotel and to be honest getting to the lobby is a little frustrating but you cannot argue that it redefines luxury, Hotel management showed us Private Guides around the Hotel in 2019, we went in the rooms, the restaurants are amazing (and expensive) and the lobby is not to shabby as well and the staff were just wonderful

So the Rosewood, the Regent and the Peninsula are just a few minutes walk from each other and as mentioned you cannot beat the location and I have always had a soft spot for the Regent Hotel, the lobby has amazing views across Victoria Harbour

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel is right in the middle of the Central Business District and gosh I can spend hours in the lobby and do a lot of people watching, i also once bumped into Russell Crow the actor (quite literally) in the lobby…

The Ritz Carlton, I love the place and the views from the 102nd floor and 118th floor are amazing and the staff are on a different level to a lot of Hotels but the location is a bit iffy and it sits on top of Kowloon Station (MTR Subway) to get to the Hotel you have to walk through Elements shopping mall and from Kowloon Station it is a 10 minute walk to the 9th floor lobby albeit through the air conditioned 5 star shopping mall! a minor detail but it will deter some potential guests.

Other than the glaring omission of the Regent Hotel, the top list is also missing the Upper House Hotel on Hong Kong Island which is a lovely hotel, I often felt that the lobby was a disaster, it is tiny and has zero atmosphere the staff are pretty young and have a certain arrogance about them but I am not surprised they do not make the top 5 list.

The Top 5 Hotels | 4 Star Hotels List | Hong Kong

Recommending 4 star hotels, well this is where it gets tricky

My favourite is the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in this category, directly across the road from the Peninsula Hotel - I have had so many guests stay there and the location is just amazing and it is also a nice place for me to hang out, so if you are looking for a great 4 star Hotel then look no further than the Sheraton on Nathan Road | Salisbury Road

Another one of my favourite Hotels is the YMCA Salisbury which is also just 20 yards away from the Peninsula Hotel, do not be put off by the name, it is just a smidgen away from being classed as a 5 star Hotel, I have had many guests stay there who just loved it and I frequently have meals in the lobby restaurant, prices are very reasonable and it is in a killer location

I am not familiar with the Nina Hotel and the Regala Skycity Hotel so I cannot comment, never had guests stay at these Hotels

The Cityview Hotel is a nice solid 4 star Hotel and a short walk from Yau Ma Tei Subway station, I have been there over 10 times

So in this category the YMCA Salisbury and the Sheraton Hotel and Towers are clear leaders.

The Top 5 Hotels | Budget Hotels List | Hong Kong

To be honest I am not really familiar with Budget Hotels, however I have been to everyone of these hotels at least once and they where perfectly fine

I was recently at BP International Hotel my sister in law and her family stayed there for a week recently and I have also been there many times over the years, it is a huge hotel, the location is just fine and it has a very solid reputation oh and it is owned by the Scouts Association in Hong Kong - BP stands for Baden Powell!

The Ibis Hong Kong Hotel is quite a nice hotel and very popular, the location is a tad iffy but the room rates are pretty good

So for me, the BP International Hotel is a clear winner in the budget category.

Comparison | Ritz Carlton vs Rosewood Hotel 5 Star Hotel heavyweights | Hong Kong

Oh my, what a contest between the 2 heavyweights in the 6 star category and the Rosewood has just been crowned the best Hotel in the world in 2025

However…

I love both hotels (and they are not without some minor faults, but I am at the Ritz Carlton picking up guests a lot more than i am at the Rosewood Hotel which is in a much more convenient location and has better rooms,

I think the Ritz Carlton has the x factor despite its inconvenient location, I cannot put into words the feeling of being in a room over 100 floors up and the simply magnificent views, they also have the Ozone Bar on the top floor of the building, yes, 118 floors up! top that as they say and I could spend all day in the lounge

As a final comment, it really does not matter which of these 2 hotels you choose, you will have an amazing stay at either
