The awesome modern new house at 29 Lugard Road, Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, it seems to have sprung up out of nowhere!
“It is not often I am surprised but coming across this new house on Lugard Road at Victoria Peak certainly surprised the hell out of me! I have been to Lugard Road over 6,000 times since 1972 but I generally do not venture as far as No. 28 or 29 Lugard Road, I go past 27 Lugard Road all the time but 29 Lugard Road is a good 15 - 20 minute walk past the Lugard Road Lookout where I stop for the most amazing panoramic city view in the world.”
Basically the Hong Kong Government likes to promote the Peak Circular Walk which is a nature trail at Victoria Peak which is an almost fairly flat walk along Lugard Road and Harlech Road, it is roughly 3.5km and basically starts and ends at the PeaK Lookout Restaurant at Victoria Peak for an average person like me it takes around 90 minutes but much fitter people who ignore the views, houses and other stuff say about 1 hour… (good luck with that!)
To be honest other than doing the first 20 minutes along Lugard Road I do not do the whole walk as other than the amazing views there is little of note for a non hiker such as me, one tree and one bush pretty much look the same as all the other trees and bushes on the walk but I do understand that a lot of Hong Kong residents love to do the walk on a weekend for their weekly dose of the great outdoors.
As such I might only walk past 29 Lugard Road once a year at best.
Oh and trust me on this, the Peak Circular Walk is NOT a secret spot or hidden gem in this social media age.
So imagine my surprise when I decided to do the Peak Circular Walk recently for my own amusement and remind myself why people want to do the walk and this house has seemingly popped up out of nowhere.
There was a house at 29 Lugard Road that was damaged in WW 2 and then another house was built in 1957 or thereabouts so I am guessing that this was the one demolished to make way for this lovely new house. I have seen a photo of 29 Lugard Road on the Gwulo Hong Kong Historical Archive site and the house from 1957 was in its own way, similar and occupied a similar amount of space as the new house and it looks like they kept some of the old walls.
For the life of me I cannot find any article or reference to the new house or what it sold for (if that was the case) which I am betting is worth US$80 - US$100 Million as large houses on Lugard Road have gone for these sums and more, there are only 11 single home dwellings on Lugard Road so rarity is a factor in the price.
It is also possible that the owners of the house from 1957 just decided to demolish the old house and rebuild a new house, hence the lack of any sales transactions for the property., no matter, it is a lovely house.
It does look like a single family house rather than apartments and compared to all the other houses along Lugard Road it is very, very modern and I have decided that I could certainly live there at a pinch! as much as I like the old colonial style houses, I also quite like this modern design.
… and now all we need is for Dragons Lodge at 32 Lugard Road to be given a makeover and for the record it is reputed to be haunted so that might be wishful thinking!
