“Jewish people were amongst the first settlers to arrive in Hong Kong soon after the island was ceded to Britain following the Treaty of Nanking (1842). This early community consisted primarily of so-called ‘Baghdadi’ commercial entrepreneurs who migrated under the auspices of British imperial expansion from the Middle East, through India, and on to the China coast. The prime focus of their activities in Hong Kong was management of their commercial links with the Chinese treaty ports. One of the earliest and most successful Jewish families to arrive in China during this period were the Sassoons. In 1900, there were around 165 Jews living in Hong Kong (as against a total population of 221,441 in 1891), most of whom were Baghdadi merchants working in, or connected to, Sassoon firms.
At the turn of the twentieth century, Russian and Eastern European Jewish people arrived in Hong Kong to escape antisemitic pogroms. In the 1930s, they were joined by German and Austrian Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe, most of whom were travelling to ‘visa-free’ Shanghai. By 1939 there may have been 300 to 400 Jews in Hong Kong among a total population of 1.6 million.
In the post-war years, Hong Kong once again became a place of transmigration for Jews leaving China for Israel, America, and Australia. Jewish organisations such as the local Jewish Women’s Association and the international American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC - of which Horace Kadoorie was the Honorary Representative) helped Jewish refugees find new homes around the world.”

The gravestone of Lady Kadoorie in the Hong Kong Jewish Cemetery
I have done hundreds of Jewish Heritage and Cultural Tours since 2011 in Hong Kong and it gives me great joy and pride to do this, Jewish Culture has been a cornerstone of Hong Kong society since around 1850 or thereabouts.
The current population of Jewish people in Hong Kong is around 4,000 (it was estimated at 5,000 pre - covid) and the 2 notable families historically where the Sassoons and the Kadoories, the Sassoons faded into obscurity somewhat whilst the Kadoories are a powerhouse in Hong Kong and probably most famous for their ownership of Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels which in turns owns the Peninsula Hotel Group, the Peak Tower and Peak Tram and many other businesses in Hong Kong.
A lot of Hong Konger’s are strangely unaware that we have a small Jewish population but the signs are there if you know where to look.
..another famous Jewish Businessman in Hong Kong is Allan Zeman (Canadian | German), also a Billionaire and his nickname is Mr. Lan Kwai Fong… Lan Kwai Fong is the world famous entertainment district in the Central Business District of Hong Kong | Mr. Zeman is a major property developer and owns most of the buildings in and around Lan Kwai Fong.
He also advises the Hong Kong Government on many subjects including Tourism and he is a very cool guy!
Lan Kwai Fong Entertainment District
Created by Allan Zeman in 1983 and he owns many of the buildings in the Entertainment District
… and yes, Lan Kwai Fong remains the no. 1 place to visit in Hong Kong for a drink and meal when the sun goes down!
Historically probably the most famous and prominent Jewish person in Hong Kong was probably Sir Matthew Nathan, the 13th Governor of Hong Kong well over a hundred years ago, whilst he was very low profile in the Jewish Community he was considered a very effective administrator and Nathan Road in Kowloon (which was originally called Robinson Road) was named after him in 1909 so his legacy lives on.

So, tell me more about your Jewish Heritage and Cultural Tours
Whilst it is possible to do an 8 hour tour of Jewish Heritage and Culture in Hong Kong (which I have never done by the way) all my guests have simply opted for a 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 or 8 hour Private Tour which incorporate the main elements of Jewish Heritage and Culture in Hong Kong.
This generally means a specific visit to the Ohel Leah Synagogue, Nathan Road, the Peninsula Hotel and a ride on the Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak for the most amazing city view in the world and a look at the Peak Tower.
In general everybody opts not to visit the Jewish Cemetery in Happy Valley as it is in an off the beaten track location and takes a fair amount of time to get there, I have been there on my own twice and I have posted here a couple of images. I must stress that if a visit to the Jewish Cemetery is on your wish list then I will make it happen.
I should also point out that there is a smaller synagogue in Hong Kong which really is in a great location, it is in the building right next door to the Kowloon Shangri La Hotel in TST, Kowloon in Hong Kong and a 10 minute walk from Nathan Road and the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, I have had many Jewish Guests stay at the Kowloon Shangri La Hotel simply because it is a 5 star Hotel and is one minute away from the Synagogue.
So there you go and if you are interested in a Jewish Heritage and Cultural Tour in Hong Kong then please contact me.
Please note I pick you up an drop you off at your Hotel.
If you have any questions then please use my simple contact form on my contact J3 page or send me an email for a prompt response.

My insider tip 1
Please note that in general if you book a tour on Viator or Tripadvisor you generally have NO control over what guide will lead your Private Tour of Hong Kong and this is the most important component of the tour. I urge you to check the actual company website and book via their website and do not forget to read Tripadvisor reviews as well.
My insider tip 2
My Private Tours are a combination of walking and using public transport and we go at a pace that suits you, I have never owned or driven a car in Hong Kong and I am somewhat of an expert on public transport, you want to know what makes Hong Kong tick well, travelling on the subway, buses, ferries, trams etc gives you that insight an insight you will not get sat in the back of a car and it enables us to cover a lot more ground on our tour.
