Without trucks in Hong Kong, where would we be?

A fairly typical truck shot in Hong Kong, a truck delivering stuff to a local supermarket chain and also doing home deliveries
“I often get the impression that Hong Kong residents are as interested in the role of trucks in Hong Kong as they are in discussing the amount of blubber in the armpits of sumo wrestlers in Japan.
I mean talk about taking trucks for granted and yet if you stop for a moment and reflect on just how many trucks are on the streets of Hong Kong you would realise that Hong Kong would grind to a halt within a day without them and we should in fact celebrate our unsung truck drivers and thank them for their hard work and dedication”
i have taken and uploaded to my Flickr site just about 20,000 images of trucks on the streets of Hong Kong and below is the blurb that describes truck culture in Hong Kong
I have spent a lot of time in recent years taking photographs of Trucks in about 10 different locations around Hong Kong and you see huge trucks in some odd locations (you wonder how the truck will fit) but I have come to realise that Truck Drivers have special skills and are actually very safe drivers.
They also like a bit of recognition as well, I get a lot of smiles and waves!
I have done a bit of research into how much Truck Drivers earn, 100 different articles and a 100 different figures, I am guessing that it is roughly HK$25,000 per month or US$3,200 , some researchers state that the hourly rate is around HK$170 per hour or US$22 I am also guessing they are working 6 days a week and for many drivers particularly the large vehicles they have no assistant in the cab with them, it probably gets a little lonely.
So truck drivers can earn a fairly decent wage if they work long hours and this takes into account you have to be a pretty good driver to be a truck driver particularly if you are in a massive truck where a moments indecision can be disastrous..
So my hats off to the men and women of Hong Kong who drive trucks for a living on our congested roads.
Hong Kong Transport - Trucks
The Hong Kong Truck Culture
The number of Trucks, Vans* and Special Purpose Vehicles (Light, Medium & Heavy) registered + licenced in Hong Kong seems to fluctuate between 120,000 - 125,000 vehicles and presumably new trucks registered are offset by old trucks being retired or sold over the border in China.
*Vans are classified as Light Goods Vehicles and are not shown in this album
In Hong Kong Trucks are classified as GOODS VEHICLES By the Transport Department - see below
☛Light Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight not exceeding 5.5 tonnes.
☛Medium Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 5.5 tonnes but not exceeding 24 tonnes.
☛Heavy Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 24 tonnes but not exceeding 38 tonnes.
The major truck types you tend to see in urban areas are trucks carrying construction materials or waste, dump trucks, concrete mixers and all sizes of delivery trucks... outside of the urban areas it is container trucks and large trucks carrying construction materials.
The following brands of Trucks can be seen on the streets of Hong Kong and include:-
Beiben ✚ Bell ✚ CAMC ✚ CNHTC ✚ DAF ✚ Dennis ✚ Dong Feng ✚ FAW ✚ Fuso ✚ Foton ✚ Ford ✚ Hino ✚ Howo ✚ Hyundai ✚ Isuzu ✚ Iveco ✚ JAC ✚ Kato ✚ KIA ✚ Liebherr ✚ MAN ✚ Mercedes Benz ✚ Mitsubishi ✚ Nissan ✚ Renault ✚ Scania ✚ Shacman ✚ Sinotruk ✚ Suzuki ✚ Toyota ✚ UD ✚ Volvo ✚ Zoomlion
Hong Kong is a brand conscious place even for trucks (!) hence the popularity of the European brands, Scania and Man are very popular and even the older trucks look the business and they are utterly reliable.
Isuzu is the market leader in terms of sales volume for all types of trucks.

The number of trucks on the roads here is quite staggering and there are pretty much trucks for any speciality, my favourite being the one image I have taken of a truck that cleans road tunnels!
Below are a selection of trucks and their primary function and yes, we should thank our lucky stars for having such a large number of drivers that keep Hong Kong ticking, they work long hours 6 or 7 days a week.
Ps - I have not included vans in these images even though the Government classifies them as light goods vehicles (trucks) to me a van is NOT a truck.
