“Generally at this point in my blog post I would be extolling the virtues of doing private tours in Hong Kong and why not? it is an incredible city…. however……
A lot of Tour Companies in Hong Kong for some reason still promote neon signs as a unique selling point of a night tour in Hong Kong, I find this to be incomprehensible and I can sum it up with the image below which was taken a long long time ago on Nathan Road, Kowloon in Hong Kong.
I have lived in Hong Kong for 53 years and one of my everlasting memories is the day we arrived in Hong Kong on January 2nd 1972, we were in a Hotel basically a hundred yards from Nathan Road in Kowloon and when darkness fell we ventured out and where basically in awe but also totally overwhelmed by all the neon signs on Nathan Road, basically as per the image.
It was a glorious sight.
That was 53 years ago and I am sad to report that most of the signs on Nathan Road in Kowloon are long gone, there are very few spots left where neon lights are in evidence but certainly nothing like the image and you need to know this and yes I have written a few blog posts on this matter - click on the link above for my most recent post about neon signs in Hong Kong.
Lights are still a big part of the Hong Kong night scene as are night markets and such…. so please do read on”

I am never quite sure why some Tour Companies in Hong Kong start their Night Tours at 3pm and recommend a 4, 5 and 6 hour tour when 3 hours is quite sufficient, just a personal opinion of course, to me a night tour should start at 7pm and end at 10pm ie when it is night time! I often surmise that they have difficulties in providing guides who are willing to give up their nights to do a tour! Also a lot of companies have food tasting aspects of their night tour as well as sightseeing but even so……
I have lived in Hong Kong for 53 years and one of the saddest things that I have witnessed over the decades is the Hong Kong Governments policy of taking down Neon Lights in every district in Hong Kong for “safety reasons”
Neon Lights are Hong Kong Cultural Heritage 101 and anyone who visited Nathan Road in Kowloon in the 1970’s would be shocked at what they see now. I understand the Government policy, we have had instances of signs falling from a height but surely a policy of mandatory upkeep and repair is better than simply removing every sign they deem a risk?
Anyway, all is not lost, we still have neon signs and people are campaigning for the right to install new ones subject to approval, I still have hopes that Nathan Road will glow again and that we will see iconic images again like the one above.
Hong Kong at night is something to behold and I have done many night tours over the years. as far as I am concerned we have 3 amazing things to do | see when darkness falls and I must stress that if you have
The worlds best panoramic city view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak (subject to clear weather conditions)
The view of Hong Kong Island across Victoria Harbour from TST Promenade in Kowloon and a ride on the iconic Star Ferry
A visit to the Temple Street Night Market in Jordan, Kowloon or the Ladies Market in Mong Kok, Kowloon
I will also fit in other interesting things within the allotted time frame. (I do like to walk through the Iconic Peninsula Hotel Lobby at night!)
I also have a plan B if Victoria Peak is fogged in.
No matter how many times I do a night tour I am in awe of what I am seeing. A lot of Hong Kong Tour Companies have foodie aspects to their tours which is absolutely fine although I am not sure why you would start a night tout at 3pm | 4pm just to fit that in?
The Temple Street Night Market has undergone a major revamp in the past few years with a new street food section being introduced and it is pretty good, the food on offer is quite excellent and sufficient to give you an introduction to the Hong Kong Street Food scene… Temple Street also encompasses the darker | seedier side of Hong Kong (it is perfectly safe), it has been like this for the 50 years I have been visiting it, I was most recently there in April 2025
I have also read many reviews over the years that mock the Temple Street Night Market and the Ladies Market and I have to say that I do not really understand the comments, the biggest problem for people is the tackiness of the markets, stall holders selling cheap rubbish for tourists, so what? in my experience a lot of the “stuff” on sale at the markets cannot be found elsewhere in Hong Kong and where else are you going to find good quality knock off designer products? it is what it is.
…. and yes there are some great night markets in all Asian Cities each with their own individual identity it is illogical to compare a market in Taiwan or Thailand to our night markets, different countries with vastly different cultures.
But it is not just the merchandise that is popular…. with the right person to show you around you will see the darker side and in my opinion the more authentic side of the district. I have also noticed reading many reviews mentioning pickpockets at the Temple Street Night Market, to me this is nonsense, how on earth do they know someone is a pickpocket expert? Let me be clear, we have one of the most professional Police Forces in the world and they take crime seriously even so called petty crime, you would be amazed at how many Police Officers circulate in the market at night, many of them in plain clothes, if there was an epidemic of pickpockets it would be a major news story and you never see articles about this in the press.
Like any city in the world one should be cautious and aware of the surroundings, that is just common sense particularly in crowded street markets.
…. and let me be clear, the Hong Kong Government has invested heavily in revamping the Temple Street experience and it has worked, I do not consider these two markets to be tourist traps rather they are a great introduction into what I call the “Real Hong Kong”
One final point is that most people do not realise just how big the Temple Street Night Market is, it is actually split into 2 sections, the old original section and the new section, most people are not aware of the old section as it is a 5 - 10 minute walk from the new section and it is not obvious at how you would find the old section, you basically have to walk through a mini park which houses a local Temple to reconnect to Temple Street, The new section so to speak is where the Street Food section is located.
I am always open to suggestions if you have something specific you wish to see at Night which brings me to the Symphony of Lights Laser Light Show that takes place at 8pm every night. This is a tricky subject as frankly it is completely underwhelming and has been since the beginning, it lasts for less than 10 minutes and that start time of 8pm makes it difficult to do my suggested itinerary as you have to be in a specific spot at 8pm
Seeing Hong Kong Island from Kowloon at night is a wonder to behold either from TST Promenade or the Ocean Terminal Deck and from my perspective you are not missing anything by skipping the Laser Light Show.
To be fair the Government is looking to do a major revamp at the show at sometime in 2025 and by all accounts it will be a game changer, (that is what they promised in 2018 when it was last tinkered with and that failed to materialise ) that remains to be seen but if it does end up being a spectacular event then I will eat humble pie and fit it into my plans!

My insider tip 1
Please note that in general if you book a tour on Viator or Tripadvisor you generally have NO control over what guide will lead your Private Tour of Hong Kong and this is the most important component of the tour. I urge you to check the actual company website and book via their website and do not forget to read Tripadvisor reviews as well.
My insider tip 2
I have done a lot of night tours and sometimes my guests just want to have a really nice meal in a great Chinese Restaurant and have a conversation about Hong Kong, that I can also do, talking about Hong Kong for long periods of time is what I do.!
My insider tip 3
My Private Tours are a combination of walking and using public transport and we go at a pace that suits you, I have never owned or driven a car in Hong Kong and I am somewhat of an expert on public transport, you want to know what makes Hong Kong tick well, travelling on the subway, buses, ferries, trams etc gives you that insight an insight you will not get sat in the back of a car and it enables us to cover a lot more ground on our tour.
The images below are just a small sampling of guests that I have taken on a Private 3 hour Night Tour of Hong Kong, let me, Jamie give you some fabulous memories to take home with you.
