Private Tour Itineraries in Hong Kong

This is always a tricky subject as it is not a simple exercise in fact it is very, very complicated and I say that after completing over 2,360+ Private Tours since I started reasearching the subject and setting up in 2010.

Quite simply there are literally millions of permutations.

Sample Itineraries for my Tours | Experiences

Unique Private Tours of Hong Kong

I often receive requests for sample itineraries, but my response remains consistent: I don’t provide them. My private tours of Hong Kong are designed to be one-of-a-kind experiences, tailored specifically to each guest’s preferences. , I can confidently say that no two tours have ever been identical. Each tour is uniquely crafted to align with the individual desires of my guests.

The customization process begins with a brief, face-to-face conversation at the start of the tour. In just five minutes, we discuss your interests, must-see locations, or any specific wishes you may have. This allows me to create an itinerary on the spot that suits your preferences and takes practical factors into account. With tours ranging from 3 to 8 hours, the possibilities are vast, and I ensure the plan is flexible to accommodate your needs and interests.

Factors such as the weather on the day of the tour and your physical condition are also considered when planning the experience. My approach avoids rushing from one site to another to simply check off a list. Instead, I focus on creating a meaningful and enjoyable journey that reflects what you want to see and do, ensuring a relaxed and personalized pace.

With over 2,360+ private tours completed and I have lived in Hong Kong since January 2nd 1972 I bring extensive knowledge and expertise to every experience. My goal is to deliver a tour that feels uniquely yours, shaped by your vision and my ability to bring it to life in a way that showcases the best of Hong Kong.

This is straight from my FAQ page on my website

I should also point out the harsh reality of being in the Private Tour Business, I have had many people ask me to prepare itineraries for them in advance and I refuse simply because I know they are going to shop it around to other tour companies to get a cheaper price, good luck with that.

I simply send a message outlining why I do not provide up front itineraries and if it is a genuine enquiry they will come back to me.

Honestly I understand why people do that, they figure that with my long experience of doing private tours, well I am going to give them a great itinerary, well it is not that simple.

AI Sample Itineraries | Fair but not close to being perfect | Hong Kong

3-Hour Night Itinerary: Evening Magic – Amped-Up Version (After Dark – High-Wow Factor)

Hong Kong nights are electric - amped to maximize lights/energy.

Start: Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade / Avenue of Stars (45–60 minutes, arrive ~7 PM)

Early spot for best views—walk promenade, Clock Tower lit up, skyline glowing.

Highlight: Symphony of Lights (8 PM, 13–15 minutes)

Prime viewing from TST waterfront (outside Cultural Centre/Avenue of Stars—music broadcast here). Spectacular building lasers/sounds—family wow moment.

Then: Star Ferry Night Ride (45–60 minutes round trip)

Ferry to Central and back (or Wan Chai loop if timing)—harbor lit like a movie set, cooler breeze.

End: Temple Street Night Market (45–60 minutes)

Short MTR to Yau Ma Tei—vibrant stalls, street food (curry fish balls, stinky tofu if adventurous, egg waffles for kids), opera singers/busking. Lively atmosphere, easy family wander. Or TST harbor-view dinner if prefer seated.

I will do you one favour, I will give you my opinion based on the fact I am in my 16th year of doing private tours in Hong Kong and I have done many night tours.

I inputted a simple query into AI along the lines of “give me the best itinerary for a 3 hour night tour of Hong Kong” and this is the exact response

I will do you one favour, I will give you my opinion based on the fact I am in my 16th year of doing private tours in Hong Kong and I have done many night tours.

Here are the issues and the times stated by AI are way, way off

TST Promenade | Avenue of the Stars

Nice idea but many, many thousands of people have exactly the same idea and they get there earlier to stake out a seat, it is mainly Mainland Chinese Tourists, getting there at 7pm, well it is just jammed and it can be very frustrating because all the best seating or viewing spots are long gone and seemingly every 20 seconds a tout will offer you a seat on a harbour cruise. (which are quite awful)

The Symphony of Lights Laser Light Show

Well it lasts for 8 - 10 minutes only and has done since 2004, I try and be enthusiastic about it but the fact remains is that it is totally underwhelming, a long promised revamp has yet to materialise, for me personally even without the light show the harbour view is magnificent at night, “wow moment” just spin for the light show

The Star Ferry

I love the ferry across the harbour at night, problem is these days, after the light show or before the light show there could be a 500 - 1,000 people jammed in a small space waiting to get on the Star Ferry, just warning you in advance, it is a popular thing to do at night and frankly there is no need for a round trip, you can get back to Kowloon just as fast on the subway in Central District

Temple Street Night Market

Abolutely worth a visit, that is not in dispute and the street food section is pretty damned good however if you got the subway to the MTR Station at Yau Ma Tei then this is a huge error on the part of AI - the night market is pretty long and is in 3 stages, the official start and street food section is in Jordan, one stop before Yau Ma Tei on the subway so you need to get off at Jordan MTR Station and then find the entrance on Jordan Road, it will take 45 minutes to walk all 3 sections and a warning that AI does not mention, Jordan is a gritty neighbourhood and the sex trade is out in the open and very visible particularly at the start and beginning of the popular first section, just be warned if you have kids.

At the end of the day, on my 3 hour night tour I can fit a lot more in, I would skip the light show completely and in a nutshell you would enjoy my tour a lot, lot more and the same goes if you booked a night tour with my friends.

I have been using AI for over a year now, at first and like many people I was somewhat skeptial but AI now is nothing like it was a year ago, it seems to improve every day but AI is not perfect and never will be

Quite simply the human factor is missing, AI has not done 2,360+ private tours like I have, it has not been on the streets, it has not figured out the hundreds of permutations for transport nor taken into account the thousands of attractions and places to go, it cannot predict weather and it has no concept if time and how even small things can knock things out of wack in an instant, it’s how to get to guides are not detailed enough and are often incorrect with transport and cost options and most importantly it cannot tell stories.

The itineraries AI has prepared for me are basically me testing how it resonds to a typical enquiry and whilst on the surface the itinerary might fit with what you have read on social media (seemingly the go to how to explore Hong Kong Guidej) but there are often glaring deficiencies in the itinerary and it really has no concept of time

I am quite sure over the next 5 years AI will learn but even then, it will still not be able to suggest a great itinerary for the reasons I have stated above.

My only tip and this is simply what I have learned over the past year is that the more information you ask for when requesting the better the response, for great results you have to be really detailed and therein lies the problem, human nature. I can spend a couple of hours with AI going back and forth defining the parameters to get the desired information, most people are simply too lazy to do that! Again, that human factor.

So, if you want basic itineraries then go right ahead and accept the AI results and run with them but if you want a first class experience then book a Private Tour Guide who will after talking with you in person for a few minutes be able to come up with a great itinerary and get the timing just right

I do not do food tours in Hong Kong but I know people that do!

I am pleased to say a lot of Food Tour Companies will have egg tarts on their tasting menu

I have very specific reasons and part of it is that I do not speak Cantonese or write Chinese, I am from Yorkshire in England and I lack the language gene and it is not through lack of trying and yes a lot of restaurants do not have English menu’s or staff who speak conversational English.

.. and yet I have eaten at close to 1,400 restaurants in Hong Kong since January 2nd 1972, my wife was born in Hong Kong and we have been together over 40 years and her first language is Cantonese and a lot of her family are Chinese or half Chinese so I have never had much of an issue!

This does not translate to doing food tours though, yes, I could do them, no problem there but they would never ever be as good as the food tours done by my friends (see the 3 links above) most of their awesome guides are locally born Hong Kong Chinese and obviously food culture is part of their DNA, it is impossible for me to compete with that!

So please feel free to contact them for food tours
