The History and Evolution of the Street Food Culture in Hong Kong : For curious visitors who want to explore Hong Kong’s Iconic Food Items and Local Dining Culture
I do not do food tours in Hong Kong (and I have written blog posts on the reason why), I leave that to local experts and Food Tour Companies are also very familiar with the Street Culture in Hong Kong.
For the record I generally stay away from Street Food with two exceptions - Egg Waffles and Egg Tarts which I could munch on all day, it is just a personal thing, I have never been a fan of street food unless it is sweet! I am more about sitting down in a restaurant and yes I get grief from family and friends who cannot understand why I am so boring when it comes to food!
I also love ice cream but I am very very fussy when it comes to that
So, don’t mind me, when you are in Hong Kong - Indulge in whatever takes your fancy
Even better, book a food tour where you can pig out to your hearts content!

Top 15 Street Foods in Hong Kong to try for Tourists 2026
That is a pretty extensive list to try and as is typical in Hong Kong, everyone has their own list which they may or may not stick to when showing friends around or eating out with family, everyone has their likes or dislikes,
I have offended thousands of people after 54 years in Hong Kong because I am so fussy when it comes to eating food, it does not matter what the food is or whether it is Asian Food, Western Food or whatever, if I do not like the look of it or the smell or something is not quite right then I will not try it. i simply do not subscribe to the theory that in order not to offend people you should bite your tongue and eat something that you find disgusting, that is just dumb to me.
I refuse to eat offal, I will not eat any meat that comes with bones, I will not eat fish with bones, I cannot stand spicy foods, I will eat shrimp dumplings but will not eat seafood with shells and such (but I will eat most veggie items) I think I am normal, everyone else thinks I am weird! oh and lest I forget, I absolutely hate stinky tofu! and I have written blog posts about why I hate Pineapple Buns!
I am quite sure most people with love street food in Hong Kong.

Typical Snacks | Street Food | Hong Kong
I do so love egg waffles and these days they can come in 50 different flavours, the rest (except egg tarts) I pretty mmuch ignore.
Here is my recommendation
You should do a Hong Kong street food tour to dive deep into local culture, discover hidden culinary gems and authentic flavors (like curry fish balls, egg tarts, wontons) guided by locals who share history and stories, saving you planning time and revealing dishes you'd miss alone, all while experiencing the city's vibrant, bustling atmosphere like a true resident. It's an immersive, delicious way to understand Hong Kong's heart, blending history, resilience, and incredible food.
…. and this is precisely what my friends do.
Key Reasons to Go on a Food Tour:
Authentic Local Experience: Eat what locals eat in neighborhood spots, not just tourist traps, and experience the real Hong Kong vibe.
Discover Local Haunts: Guides lead you to stalls and eateries in hidden alleys that most visitors overlook, uncovering A secluded, lesser-known places can be real highlights of doing a food tour.
Expert Guidance: Passionate, local guides share stories, history (from colonial times to modern life), and insights into Cantonese cuisine you won't get otherwise.
Variety & Quantity: Sample a wide array of essential street foods like Wonton Noodles, Egg Tarts, Curry Fish Balls, and Braised Beef Offals without the stress of choosing or planning.
Cultural Immersion: Connect with the city's culture, history, and the resilience of its people through its unique food scene.
Efficiency: Save hours of scrolling reviews and planning; the tour does the work so you can focus on eating and enjoying.
What You'll Experience:
Tantalizing Flavors: From savory to sweet, experience the diverse taste profile of Cantonese street food.
Bustling Atmosphere: Feel the energy of vibrant markets and iconic districts like Mong Kok or Sham Shui Po.
Insider Knowledge: Learn about key ingredients, Cantonese culinary philosophy, and the significance of local produce.
In short, a food tour makes your culinary exploration efficient, educational, and incredibly delicious, offering a deeper connection to Hong Kong than you could achieve on your own

The Temple Street Night Market | Street Food | Hong Kong
The new hottest place in Hong Kong to indulge in street food and kudos to the Hong Kong Government for making this happen. I have been going to the Temple Street Night Market since it opened in the mid 1970’s but I always thought there was something missing, yes, a street food section.
The Temple Street Night Market is generally on most visitors wish list when coming to Hong Kong, the new street food section should have been in place 20 years ago but I am not complaining. it is there now and adds a new dimension to the whole, what to do a night in Hong Kong
It has proven to be very popular.
All they need to do now is set up a street food section of Stanley Market!
I do not do food tours
I am pleased to say a lot of Food Tour Companies will have egg tarts and egg puffs on their tasting menu
I have very specific reasons and part of it is that I do not speak Cantonese or write Chinese, I am from Yorkshire in England and I lack the language gene and it is not through lack of trying and yes a lot of restaurants do not have English menu’s or staff who speak conversational English.
.. and yet I have eaten at close to 1,400 restaurants in Hong Kong since January 2nd 1972, my wife was born in Hong Kong and we have been together over 40 years and her first language is Cantonese and a lot of her family are Chinese or half Chinese so I have never had much of an issue!
This does not translate to doing food tours though, yes, I could do them, no problem there but they would never ever be as good as the food tours done by my friends (see the 3 links above) most of their awesome guides are locally born Hong Kong Chinese and obviously food culture is part of their DNA, it is impossible for me to compete with that!
So please feel free to contact them for food tours
