Photo of the day No. 37 - View from our Apartment in Hong Kong

Most people in Hong Kong do not have any view to speak of!

We have lived in this lovely apartment for 16 years now and this is the amazing view we have from our balcony!

“We live in a middle floor apartment in a small town in the Hong Kong suburbs and we have been blessed with this sea view. We always count our blessing because in the 53 years I have lived in Hong Kong this is the only decent view we have had, most of the time our views where simply looking at other apartment blocks.

What is even better is that no one will be able to build in front of us because there are 2 roads and a beach! it is quite common in Hong Kong to lose your view to new buildings! not in this location.

As recently as 2022 Hong Kong was the world’s most vertical city, with more than 2,300 skyscrapers over 100 metres (328 feet) tall, according to building information directory Emporis. But the rest of the world is catching up.”

So, the image has had my usual Photoshop Camera Raw Filter touch up but basically it was just one of the days when the weather gods aligned with other gods in the universe, it was a glorious sunny day, very hot and humid and some nice cloud formations.

The view we have is essentially of the Airport Bridge on Lantau Island in Hong Kong, in the background is Hong Kong island, so yes I can see Victoria Peak. There is not a whole lot of sea faring vessels sailing past our apartment block on any given day other than a steady stream of container ships, some of them are huge.

It is not perfect, our balcony is a balcony in name only, you could fit one small chair only, there is no room for a table or more than 1 chair, essentially standing room only and basically the only useful role of the balcony (other than the view) is that I can get an instant weather check for most of Hong Kong in real time,

We have over 50,000 buildings in Hong Kong and 44,000+ of them are private buildings and over 80% of them are simply apartment blocks. ( Hong Kong’s current population is 7.54 million people)

Hong Kong is 430sq m or 1,114 sq km of which over 70% is not developed which explains the density of buildings here.

Currently the tallest building in Hong Kong is ICC or International Commerce Centre at 118 floors and ranked no. 13 of the tallest buildings in the World.

We quite often thank our lucky stars that we have this view, I used to hate looking at other apartment blocks or a green hillside and we are fortunate that we have a lovely landlord who doesn’t stick on to the rent a massive premium for this view, most Hong Kong residents are simply not as lucky as we are.

Yep, sometimes the weather gods get a bit peeved and we can get some very nasty weather including roiling thunderstorms, waterspouts and sometimes days of very heavy rain.

I am not joking about the heavy rain, 8th October 2021 we had 33cm of rain in ONE DAY!

Eerie and ghostly foggy days are very common

Yep, that is quite a rare double rainbow!

… and this is a film camera image of our view taken by our youngest son who is a much better photographer than I will ever be!
